I think those might have been a bit of a trend in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s, then disappeared for some unknown reason. I seem to remember them installing a few like that in some of the really early This Old House episodes.

The new version would need to be digital, on your home wifi, and act as a phone receiver of sorts similar to the wifi-only apple watch. I’m probably leaving off some other functions but you get the gist.
